• Nancy Klein's The Spindle and the Shrine: Daily Life of Women in Classical Times, written to accompany an exhibit on ancient Greek women at Indiana University in 2000, is a good place to begin.

• Prof. Marilyn Katz provides more depth in an excellent brief survey of women's life in ancient Greece (Daughters of Demeter).

• Thomas R. Martin's Overview of Classical Greek History (Perseus Project) has concise sections on Greek women: "Inequality and Women in the City-State," "Women and the Household" (and the sections immediately following), and "Property, Social Freedom, and Athenian Women."

Girlhood and Marriage: In Prof. Katz's Daughters of Demeter, click forward to the successive sections on "Maiden Songs and Marriage Ritual" and "Farming and Fertility."

"Bad women:" Again, Prof. Katz's essay, sections on "The Drama of Social Life" and "The Politics of Public Life."
